Victorian blog #1: Elements of Romance

"Harry, I am in love. She is everything to me." -Dorain Gray Chapter 4 pg.50
Dorain Gray is madly in love with Sibyl Vane. They have passionate love for one another. They are everything for eachother, for a while. Their love is nothing but a dream and experience for Dorain. He says he loves her with every fiber in his body, but in reality he is just in love with the image that she gives off, her acting, her beauty, her presence. Their romance is of a short time, it lasts until the day Sibyl gives her life up.
Dorain has promissed to mary this young girl, and at the time he regrets nothing. But when Dorain decides to show Basil and Henry this wonderful talented creature who he wants to marry, she makes a fool out of herself up on the stage, in the name of love. Dorain is nothing but pleased, he is horrified, embarassed, and disappointed. He is extremely hard on the girl, he tells her he does not love her any longer and wants nothing to do with her. The girl is heartbroken, and kills herself as Juliet did for her Romeo and her love.
The second Dorain performs such things, his portrait alters dramatically, giving his soul a sense of cruelty and malice. This is the start of what Dorain will live through for the rest of his life. Pure horror fills his heart at the sight of what he sees in the portrait. His true soul will now be there for the world to look upon.

  1. I completely agree with you. Dorian Gray's fickle character is shown when he verbally abuses Sybil, who has already fallen in love with him. I hate how Dorian yelled at her because of his friends' disapproval. Had he truly been in love, he shouldn't have cared about what others thought.
