Victorian blog #1: Literary Element : Flashback

"Two months ago I went to a crush at Lady Brandon's...I turned halfway around and saw Dorain Gray for the first time...I knew I had come face to face with someone whose mere personality was so fascinating that, if I allowed it to do so, it would absorb my whole nature, my whole soul, my very art itself." -Basil Hallward Chapter 1 pg.9-10

A flashback is an interruption of the chronological order or time to present something that happened before the story and that plays or will play an important role. This specific flahback that Basil had, and told Lord Henry about in the garden was to try to explain to Henry how extraordinary and destined it was for Dorain Gray and himself to meet. This had happened quite a while back so Basil had to remember and bring back the memory of  that day.
Dorain's and Basil's meeting was indeed destined, there was something special about the way they both knew their friendship was the pure doing of fate. If these two men had not met then who knows what might have happened, or better yet, what might have not. Also Lord Henry knowing, and having this mental image that Basil was painting of Dorain Gray with his words, then maybe Henry would not have been amused or interested in such a man, and things would have been different for Dorain's life.

  1. I feel that it was not destiny to have Basil and Dorian to be friends, but Basil and Henry, and that had to be done through Basil. Just a thought.(:

  2. I get what you were trying to say Brittany, but if it was destiny for Henry and Dorian to wouldn't first have to be destiny for Basil to meet Dorian, because you have remember that the books title is the picture of Dorian Gray, which Basil drew. So all in all everything that happened was destined to happen, one step at a time.
