Victorian blog #1: Elements of Romance/Relationship
Dorain Gray and Basil Hallward have a kind of odd and perculiar realtionship. They are obviously extremely good friends, or at least that is how it seems to be for Basil. They met at Lady Brandon's party and were inseperable since then. They knew they were destined to know eachother, and both aknowledged the fact that they had something special, or something special would form, either in their friendship or from it. Their friendship would be the start of a new beginning, or a start of a forever. Basil has a deep admiration, care, affection, and a kind of love towards Dorain. Dorain has a great influence on Basil's art, and he knows it. But Dorain is not just a simple sitter for Basil, as he himself says "he is absolutely necessary to [him]", Basil absolutely needs Dorain (Wilde 13). While Dorain in the other hand has no true strong feeling for Basil. Yes he respects him, but just to be polite. He knows there is something waiting to happen with them two, and he is just waiting to see what that something is. Dorain is still a young boy, and knows little about life. He is ignorant to what real friendship is. They are right, this frienship or meeting will bring forth something that will change both their lives. A painting, that's what will come out of it all. But not just any painting, no it is a magical enchanted picture of Dorain Gray himself that will alter the life of both men. Dorain's and Basil's relationship is also there to show the true feelings of Dorain, and how this young, immature boy's soul changes and alters.
